I will be reviewing the applications again today to make sure they are complete. You should receive an official award letter via email today. I will send the information to the Scholarship Office today for the awards to be disbursed. Neither the Study Abroad Office nor the Scholarship Office can tell you exactly which date you will receive your money but it will probably be in the next few weeks.

Wednesday’s Blog May 16, 2012

Wednesday’s Blog
At the beginning of class we heard a song called ‘When it rains in Rome‘ it was in Italian and could only understand a little, but it said something like how Rome is very pretty when it rains.

Person from Study Abroad will be here tomorrow (Thursday) around 5 to speak about us regarding money issues and John; Dr. Weber’s assistant will be in class on Friday.

We then saw a power point presentation with pictures from Rome. We saw the Piramide de Caio Cestia: to further understand the history of the pyramid we read a poem called, Rome: At the pyramid of Cestius Near the graves of Shelley and Keats (1887) Dr. Weber said to read this poem when we are in the Piramide de Caio Cestia, he also said to read the poem according to the periods not the lines.

Can you recall these people that we mention in yesterday’s class?
-Brutus: Who is Brutus? he took a big role on Julius Caesar’s assassination.
-Cervelia was Cesar’s mistress
-Cervilia’s brother? Cato
-What was Cato’s relationship with Julius Caesar? They were enemies.
-Pompei is Julius Caesar’s enemy.
-Caesar’s nephew was Octavian.
-Octimatus means the best in Latin and Popolarus was the party of the people or Caesar’s party.
-Mos Maiorum is the core concept of Roman traditionalism, from but in dynamic complement to written law, or the “time-honored principles” of behavioral models, and social practices that affected private, political, and military life in ancient Rome. Constitution Law or how you determine a sentence in a court.

What was the impact of astrologers in the Roman Empire? I think that the impact was in determining weather conditions, indication of when to go to war and held events, and it was something like superstition. They believed that you are what you are because that was your destiny and that you are the best on what you are doing and everything in the cosmos has a place.
What constitutes justice?
Justice is the application of tradition for the maintained order. Both the individual and group have rights.

Why pay so much attention to Ancient Rome? What’s the purpose?

When you see naked sculptures there are Goddess and when they have clothes on they are people. Naked sculptures are gods or goddesses because they have the perfect or ideal body.

Remember this date, 1417 … Rome has been a tourist city since 1417.

I found a great website for the Vatican. I would really like to go to mass.

See you tomorrow! Ciao! Ci Vediamo Domani!!

Tuesday’s Blog
In class we read two poems. The first poem was Rome: On the Palatine it was about describing Rome in the ruins and how you can experience it in the outer sense or visual or sound, and how those decorations in the ruins influence you in your outer senses. I enjoyed more the second poem named, Rome, building a new street in the ancient quarter. This poem has extensive architectural vocabulary in which I had to look up in the dictionary.
The Rome video was really cool; I was paying attention during the whole video and got a little sense of how Rome is. I’m very excited to go to Rome now! But I’m getting really anxious because I do not have anything ready for the trip just my attitude and U.S. passport! LOL
